Read to Them

First, one of the things you can do for your child is to read to them. Period.
But they don't sit still. Well, neither does my 3 year old daughter. I have to catch it at the right moment.
Before bed sometimes seems to do the trick. I put her in bed earlier than when I want her to sleep. Most kids try to procrastinate and want to stay up. It does the trick for Carrie. She'll beg for another story if it means she "gets to stay up."

But also, let them see you reading. They want to mimic what you do, that's why they have play kitchens, play workbenches...etc.
Let them see you reading! Even if you don't like to read, read a magazine, read something!
