Memories of Herb
Print
Today we were given the sad news that our friend and brother in Christ, Herb Harmon went to his heavenly home last night (Monday, January 1) after a life long battle with addictions.

Herb was quiet to the outside world. He opened his heart to us and loved us as his own family.

He poured his heart and soul into music.
Herb loved music. The greatest time for him would be to take out the guitar and play praise and worship music. We will never forget his rendition of B-I-B-L-E with Walter.
I would like to think of "Brand New Day" as our song. You're living the brand new day now, Herb.

Herb loved racing. He loved Nascar. His face would absolutely light up at the questions we would raise in trying to understand it all. He loved it when we'd sit down and watch a race with him and let him explain who and what was happening.

Herb loved chocolate. In fact, one night he ate an entire sleeve of Chips Ahoy in one sitting! Herb loved chocolate with peanut butter. Reese's peanut butter cups were his favorite. He'd stock up on Reese's and he'd have them in his goody container on top of the bookshelf in the basement. Herb knew to put the peanut stuff high so Walter, our allergic son, would not have access to them.

Herb loved Walter and Carrie. He always talked about how smart they were. Herb wanted to get Walter an etch a sketch for Christmas b/c he was impressed with Walter and his skills and the way he can figure things out and maneuver them.

Herb played Superman with Walter and "flew" him around the lobby area of the Nashville Rescue Mission the first time we met him.

Herb loved Carrie. She was the baby girl that showered him with kisses and hugs and loved to be held by him. She couldn't say many words, but she could manage "Hib."

On Mother's Day we also celebrated his birthday with a Publix cake with blue icing. Carrie sat on Herb's lap and the two of them shared cake. A pair of blue tongues posed for pictures.

Herb was very handy. He climbed up on our roof to clean our gutters. Three stories high on his tip toes on a ladder I nervously watched. He climbed up ladders to paint our 22 foot high walls in the living room. He held the ladder for me on the stairs while I was on my heels painting the walls in stairwell. I trusted Herb to hold the one leg of the ladder steady. Herb trusted me not to fall on him.

Herb wanted to take the kids to Chucky Cheese on what we called "Our Day" the week he was home. He would walk around with one of the kids and enjoyed sharing that time.

Herb loved the movie Bruce Almighty and he was anxious to see the Evan Almighty movie coming out.

Herb loved coffee. He loved coffee with Hazelnut Creamers. He loved strawberry milkshakes from McDonalds.

Herb loved taking the "Man Tools" and together with Jeff they blazed a trail in the woods behind our house.
