Coin Chart- Sorting and Graphing

I dumped out a change bowl.

Then, I showed him what a quarter looks like.  We first sifted through the pile to find all the quarters and put them aside.
Then, we did the same thing with dimes, nickels and then pennies.

Our next step was to count them, which was another great activity for someone learning numbers past 20.

We made a list of our counted coins.

Then, I folded a piece of paper in half, lengthwise, and then folded it again in half- creating four long columns.
I made lines for every fifth number,- 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.

Then we made a line to show how many of each we had.  If we had 6 pennies, we would draw a line after the "5 line" so he could show that the number of pennies was just a little bit more than 5.
Than we colored each column/coin number a different color.

We then compared each line, and wrote the word "MOST" and "Least" next to the column that it represented.

This was such a great activity!
Lessons in sorting, grouping, coins, counting, graphing, more or less

this can be done with anything...but little candies such as Skittles make it fun as well.
